چکیده

INTRODUCTION Although it has been speculated for many years that the prefrontal cortex plays a role in long-term memory for events, or episodic memory, only recently have researchers made a concerted attempt to define this role. Most theories of prefrontal function suggest that this region implements " top-down " or " executive " processes that influence a variety of domains, including memory. For example, Luria (1966) postulated a role for the frontal lobes in the regulation of voluntary attention and the organization of goal-directed behavior. Building on the work of Luria, Shallice (1982) argued that the frontal lobes are required for the attentional selection of schemes of action in novel situations. A complementary role suggested for the prefrontal cortex is the suppression of additionally proposed that the frontal lobes prepare sensory areas for environmental changes that will be induced by motor actions.

Autobiographical Memory across the Life Span Brain Imaging and Neuropsychology

Memory is defined as being composed of several systems, each with its distinct neural basis. Of these systems the episodic-autobiographical one is considered to have evolved latest and to be most vulnerable to brain damage or stress conditions. Especially structures of the limbic and the prefrontal cortex are regarded as essential for an appropriate processing of autobiographical events. The im...

P152: Functional and Structural Brain Changes across Childhood Traumatic Events

Although childhood is connected with high neuroplasticity changes, but because of the immaturity of the neural and cognitive systems, it is ready to grow developmental deviations and future susceptibility for neuropsychological disorders. Young children face cognitive, emotional, and linguistic limits that may lead them more vulnerable to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD prevalence d...

Shared and distinct contributions of rostrolateral prefrontal cortex to analogical reasoning and episodic memory retrieval.

Rostrolateral prefrontal cortex (RLPFC) is widely appreciated to support higher cognitive functions, including analogical reasoning and episodic memory retrieval. However, these tasks have typically been studied in isolation, and thus it is unclear whether they involve common or distinct RLPFC mechanisms. Here, we introduce a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task paradigm to c...

Prefrontal activation deficits during episodic memory in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE Episodic memory impairments represent a core deficit in schizophrenia that severely limits patients' functional outcome. This quantitative meta-analysis of functional imaging studies of episodic encoding and retrieval tests the prediction that these deficits are most consistently associated with dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex. METHOD Activation likelihood estimation (ALE) was ...

Functional–Anatomic Study of Episodic Retrieval Using fMRI

A number of recent functional imaging studies have identified brain areas activated during tasks involving episodic memory retrieval. The identification of such areas provides a foundation for targeted hypotheses regarding the more specific contributions that these areas make to episodic retrieval. As a beginning effort toward such an endeavor, whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging ...
